What is a search engine?

A search engine is a large system that collects web pages, analyses and stores them in an index, then ranks them to show the best answer for a query. Google dominates Arabic search, followed by Bing, Yandex and DuckDuckGo.

Google does not search the internet at the moment you ask; it searches its indexed copy of the internet. If you are not in the index, you do not exist.

Crawling, indexing and ranking: the full journey

  1. Discovery: the crawler reaches your page via an internal link, an external link, or your sitemap.xml.
  2. Crawling: the bot downloads the page and runs some JavaScript — heavy pages may be crawled only partially.
  3. Indexing: text, headings, images and structured data are parsed and the page is stored with an understanding of its topic.
  4. Ranking: for each query the most suitable pages are chosen by relevance, quality, authority and experience.
  5. Serving: the result appears as links, a featured snippet, or an AI-generated summary citing sources.

Search engines vs answer and AI engines

TypeExamplesWhat it returnsWhat makes you visible
Search engineGoogle, Bing, YandexA ranked list of links.Technical SEO, content and authority.
Answer engineFeatured snippets, voice assistantsOne direct answer.Q&A formatting and structured data.
Generative engineChatGPT, Gemini, PerplexitySynthesized text with citations.A clear entity and sources backing the mention.

The practical takeaway: the same technical work serves all three, but the writing differs. Content that opens with a direct two-line answer then elaborates with figures and sources is the most quotable across all of them.

What makes your page get picked?

  • Intent match: a 'price' query wants numbers; a 'what is' query wants explanation. Mixing them loses the ranking however good the text is.
  • Coverage depth: a page answering the question and its sub-questions beats one answering only the title.
  • Experience and trust: a named author, an update date, sources, and schema tying content to a real entity.
  • Page experience: fast loading, no intrusive interstitials, comfortable mobile reading.
  • Internal links: important pages should sit one or two clicks from the homepage.

Frequently asked questions

What are the major search engines?

Google leads by a wide margin in the Arab world, followed by Bing, Yandex and DuckDuckGo, alongside generative engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini.

How long until a new site appears in Google?

Indexing can take days to a few weeks after submitting a sitemap, while ranking on competitive terms takes months.

Do I need a sitemap?

Yes — especially for large, new or JavaScript-heavy sites. A sitemap speeds discovery but does not guarantee indexing on its own.
