Why local SEO is different
In local search a map pack of three businesses sits above the regular results and captures most of the clicks. Your placement there depends less on your website's strength than on three factors: proximity to the searcher, how well your profile matches the query, and prominence — your reputation, reviews and mentions across the web.
The business profile: correct setup
- Create your Google Business Profile and complete verification by mail or video.
- Pick the primary category precisely — it is the single strongest relevance signal — then add secondary ones.
- Use your real business name with no keyword stuffing; stuffing is a common cause of suspension.
- Set the address, service area and hours precisely, and update them for holidays.
- Add genuine photos of the place, team and product, and refresh them regularly.
- Fill the services and products sections completely, using terms people search for.
- Post updates regularly and answer the Q&A section yourself.
NAP consistency across the web
NAP means name, address and phone. All three must match literally everywhere: your site, your Google profile, business directories, your social pages. Small variations — an international number here and a local one there, or different street abbreviations — weaken Google's confidence that this is one entity. Pick one canonical format, document it, and stick to it.
Reviews: the most valuable and riskiest asset
- Ask at the right moment: immediately after successful delivery, with a short direct link.
- Reply to every review, positive or negative; replies signal activity and build trust.
- Answer negatives with a calm, practical resolution, not an argument; the real reader is the next customer.
- Never buy or self-write reviews: detection means deletion and possibly suspension.
- A steady flow of genuine reviews beats one sudden burst.
City pages on your website
If you serve several cities, build a page per city — but only if each is genuinely different: your team or branch there, local examples, city-specific pricing or hours, and questions its residents actually ask. Cloning one page and swapping the city name produces duplication that does not rank and may be judged worthless.
Add LocalBusiness data on your contact and branch pages, including address, phone, coordinates and opening hours.
A monthly local SEO routine
- Review profile insights: searches received, calls and direction requests.
- Publish at least one update or offer.
- Collect new reviews and reply to every one.
- Check that your details were not auto-edited by a user suggestion.
- Add your profile to one new local directory each month.
Frequently asked questions
I have no physical address. Can I appear in Maps?
Yes, as a service-area business: hide the address and define the areas you serve. You still need real proof of existence during verification.
How long until I appear in the map pack?
After verification the profile can appear within days, but reaching the top three in a competitive city takes months of reviews, consistency and activity.
Does putting the city in my business name help?
It may give a short boost but violates Google's policy and risks suspension. Use your real name and handle the city through content and categories.
