What is Google Search Console?

Google Search Console (formerly Webmaster Tools) is a completely free Google product that shows how the search engine sees your site: which pages are indexed, which queries bring impressions and clicks, and which errors block crawling. It is the only source of first-party Google performance data.

Search Console does not raise rankings by itself. It is a mirror: it reports the problem, the fix happens on your site.

Step one: verify ownership

Open search.google.com/search-console and sign in. You choose between a Domain property, which covers every subdomain and protocol and is verified through a DNS record, and a URL prefix property, which covers one address and offers easier verification methods.

MethodWhen to use itNote
DNS TXT recordFor a full Domain propertyRequires registrar access; propagation can take hours
HTML file uploadYou can upload files to the site rootDo not delete the file afterwards or verification is lost
Meta tag in the headWordPress or hosted platformsSimplest through an SEO plugin
Analytics or Tag ManagerWhen tracking already existsRequires edit permission on the same account

The performance report: the four numbers that matter

  • Impressions: how often your link appeared. A drop means lost coverage, not only lost quality.
  • Clicks: how often it was actually clicked. The gap between the two is fixed by title and description.
  • CTR: clicks ÷ impressions. High impressions with low CTR is your fastest available win.
  • Average position: your mean placement. The gap between 11 and 9 is the gap between page two and page one.

Use the Queries tab to see the real terms bringing visitors — you will usually find phrases you never planned for, and they are your best source of next article ideas. Use the Pages tab to see which content actually works.

A key filter for Arabic sites: compare Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE in the Countries tab. Winning queries often differ completely between markets.

The indexing report: why is my page missing?

StatusMeaningAction
Discovered – currently not indexedGoogle knows the URL but has not crawled it, usually low priority or a slow serverImprove internal links and server speed; do not spam the indexing request
Crawled – currently not indexedGoogle visited and judged it thin or duplicatedRewrite it deeper and more original, or merge it into a stronger page
Alternate page with proper canonical tagNormal behaviour: a main version was chosenNothing, unless the chosen version is wrong
Blocked by robots.txtYou blocked crawling yourselfReview robots.txt and remove the blocking rule
Excluded by noindex tagA head tag forbids indexingRemove the tag if the page should appear
Server error (5xx)The server failed during crawlA hosting problem — check logs immediately

Sitemaps and URL inspection

Submit your sitemap from the Sitemaps tab by entering sitemap.xml. A sitemap does not guarantee indexing but speeds discovery, especially for new sites with few backlinks. Include only indexable URLs: no noindex pages, no redirects.

After publishing or substantially updating a page, paste its URL in the URL inspection bar and click Request indexing. This queues it with priority — hours to days, not instantly. The same tool shows how Google renders the page, an essential check for JavaScript-built sites.

The reports everyone ignores but should not

  • Core Web Vitals: measures speed and layout stability from real user data, not simulation.
  • Mobile usability: most Arabic search is on phones, so any error here costs you directly.
  • Rich results: shows structured data errors that block stars and FAQ snippets.
  • Links: your most linked pages internally and externally — use it to find orphan pages.
  • Manual actions: must always be empty. Anything here is a human penalty needing urgent work.

A practical 20-minute monthly routine

  1. Compare the last 28 days with the previous period: are impressions rising or falling?
  2. Sort queries by impressions and find any with CTR under 2% at position better than 15 — rewrite title and description.
  3. Open queries at positions 8–20 and add a deeper section to the existing page.
  4. Review the indexing report and fix any new error state.
  5. Confirm the sitemap is read with no errors.

SADARA's free tools complete this routine: use the page checker for tags, the speed check for performance, and the schema validator to catch structured data problems before they surface as Search Console errors.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Search Console free?

Yes, entirely free with no site limit; you only need a Google account and ownership verification.

What is the difference between Search Console and Google Analytics?

Search Console measures what happens before the visit: impressions and clicks in search. Analytics measures what happens after: pages, sessions and conversions. They complement each other.

How long until data appears after verification?

Usually two to three days for performance data to start, and up to two weeks for full reports. Historical data from before verification is not shown.

I requested indexing and the page is still not indexed. What now?

An indexing request is a suggestion, not a command. Rejection usually means thin or duplicated content, or no internal links. Fix the cause instead of repeating the request.

Does Search Console show my visibility in AI answers?

No. AI Overview data is folded into general search numbers without breakdown, and there is no reporting for ChatGPT or Perplexity. Measuring that requires a fixed prompt set tested regularly across generative engines.
