Why this guide?
Most site owners open webmaster tools, glance at one chart and close it. The real value sits in the detailed reports nobody opens. This guide walks through each report and answers three questions: what does it measure, what is healthy, and what do I do when it degrades?
The indexing report group
| Report | Measures | Action when it breaks |
|---|---|---|
| Pages | Indexed vs excluded pages and the reason for each exclusion | Tackle the most frequent exclusion reason first; it is usually one repeated technical pattern |
| Sitemaps | Whether the sitemap was read and how many URLs were discovered | A read error means invalid XML, a block, or a redirect |
| Removals | Temporary six-month hiding of a URL | Emergency use only: the permanent fix is noindex or deletion |
| Crawl stats | Daily Google requests, response time and file types | Response time above a second shrinks crawl budget — fix hosting |
The experience report group
- LCP should be under 2.5s. The usual culprits are an uncompressed hero image or a late-loading font.
- INP should be under 200ms. It degrades with heavy third-party scripts.
- CLS should be under 0.1. Jumping happens when images lack dimensions or an ad injects late.
- Mobile usability: tiny text, tapped elements too close, or content wider than the screen — all CSS fixes.
These metrics come from 28 days of real-user data, so do not expect the report to improve right after a fix — wait a full cycle.
Rich results and structured data
This section gives a separate report for each structured data type Google finds: articles, FAQs, products, local business, breadcrumbs. Red errors block rich presentation entirely; yellow warnings only reduce the chance. Golden rule: never describe in structured data anything absent from the visible page.
Bing Webmaster Tools: why it deserves thirty minutes
Bing's share of Arabic search is small, but its relevance changed: Bing is the search index several AI assistants rely on. Registering is free, it imports your Search Console data in one click, and it gives you IndexNow, which notifies the engine the moment a page changes instead of waiting for a crawl.
A quick diagnostic table
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks drop while impressions hold | Result layout changed or an AI summary appeared above you | Performance report, month-over-month CTR |
| Impressions and clicks fall together | Lost indexing, a penalty, or an algorithm update | Pages report plus manual actions |
| New pages never get indexed | Weak internal linking or thin content | Pages report: Discovered – not indexed |
| Stars or FAQs vanished from your result | A structured data error or a display policy change | Rich results reports |
Frequently asked questions
Do I need paid tools if I use webmaster tools?
Not to start. First-party data about your own site is free. Paid tools help with competitor and backlink analysis, a later layer, not a requirement.
How often should I review these reports?
A quick weekly look at performance, monthly for indexing and experience, and immediately after any launch or migration.
Does registering with Bing hurt my Google rankings?
No. The two engines are independent and share no ranking signals.
